Wow. I've been away from the computer for a couple weeks, but this was worth coming back to.

Thank you for your words, everyone. I have been running around the last few days and am finally getting some moments to respond to things. Hannah, yes, isn't it so strange how a different sort of beauty emerges when you move a few steps away? Maybe it's the forest and trees thing. Fran, I think I'm coming from a similar perspective. I think inspiration is far bigger than the Bible. And if you're a heretic, than I must be in good company!! :) Rebecca, it sounds like we could have a *great* conversation. And Sage, ditto--looking forward to learning from you, too! Wonderful to meet you.

Kristen, I have been wanting to cultivate a relationship with the bible, and now I have found my guide! What a fascinating exploration of how the stories that define our religions and our culture can be disentangled from our desire - and ability - to claim our bodies for ourselves! Thank you for sharing your wisdom with the world in this way. I loved meeting you at blogher, and look forward to learning more from you.

I am, by choice and conversion, a Christian.
The older I get, the more I do not know for sure what that really means, except in the most basic of terms.

As I watch world events and life around me I sometimes cry and sometimes laugh at my disabillity (sp?) to define love or anything else that is supposed to be foundational.

I love it that now I am able to embrace questions in a new way...not threatened by any institution.....My Father taught me to question everything. That has had its ups and downs, but now I see it as the path through.

So when I read what you write, I can concur. Maybe I would not understand but I have the same kind of thoughts in my head and am not so good at writing them down. But if you were on a couch sitting opposite to me, I am sure we could have a realy good conversation

Very well reasoned and written, Kristin. Mostly I agree with you, especially that Jesus was a unique man, a holy man, a master. But--and here's the heretic talking--the old and new testaments, in the context of their times, are inspired books. But, the councils decided what would be eliminated and kept and so much of it was recorded so late. It's great we keep getting more and more old parchments revealed which shed even more light on Jesus--and the stories. Am I a heretic? I suppose. but I do consider myself to be a Christian nonetheless. Look forward to the next installment.

This is absolutely beautiful. What an amazing retelling of the bible. We(I) so often get caught up in this little piece that I don't like here, or this little piece over here, that we lose sight of the tapestry, the whole thing, the beauty that is the love story between god and humans. Thank you thank you thank you for sharing this.
